Starting a New Adventure at 60 Something!
A New Adventure at 60 Something: Starting My New Travel Business!
They say life is an adventure, and for me, that has never been more true than right now. At 60 (something), I’m embarking on an exciting new chapter—starting my own travel business, The Walrus Travel Company! After 40 years in the travel industry working for other companies, I decided it was time to step out on my own, take charge of my future, and create something meaningful for my family and me. This isn’t just a career move; it’s a revitalization of my passion, my purpose, and my life.
Not Ready to Retire—Ready to Reignite!
Many people my age are winding down, looking toward retirement. While I’m not ready to fully retire anytime soon, I do look forward to leaving my 9-5 job soon and having more freedom and flexibility to do what I want, when I want. So by the end of this year, I will close one chapter in my life to move on to the next. I’m looking forward to embracing a challenge that excites and energizes me; creating something that reflects my experience, my love for travel, and my desire to help others fulfill their dreams of exploring the world.
I’ve spent four decades in this industry, from working every aspect of travel agency operations (in storefront offices for many years back in the day), to starting up travel companies for other business owners (both traditional and online). In recent years mentoring other aspiring travel advisors to start up their own independent travel business. And now, I’m channeling all my knowledge, experience and passion into my own business. There is something incredibly freeing and empowering about being my own boss, making my own decisions, and building a company that aligns with my vision and values. It’s a challenge I’m ready to embrace with open arms!
A Family Business for the Future
One of the most exciting aspects of this journey is involving my family in the business. Over the years, I’ve seen how travel brings people together, and now, I have the opportunity to build something that my family can be a part of, nurture, and grow for the future. This isn’t just my dream—it’s something we can shape together, ensuring The Walrus Travel Company becomes a legacy that continues beyond just me.
Starting a business at any age is a leap of faith, and doing so at 60 (something) comes with its own challenges and rewards. The wisdom and experience I’ve gained over the years will provide a good foundation, and my passion for travel fuels my determination to make this venture a success. My goal is not only to provide exceptional travel services for you, but also to inspire and mentor others who may be considering their own late-in-life reinventions.
I look forward to connecting with people, clients and fellow entrepreneurs, helping them create unforgettable travel experiences, and sharing my knowledge and passion for the industry that has shaped my life-long career in travel. The Walrus Travel Company is not just a business for me—it’s a dream come to life, a journey I’m thrilled to be on, and a testament to the idea that new beginnings can happen at any stage of life.
So here I am, stepping into this new role as a business owner (and future content creator). It’s exhilarating, a little nerve-wracking, and incredibly fulfilling all at once. If you’re reading this and considering taking a leap into something new—whether it’s a business, a creative pursuit, or a bold change—I encourage you to go for it. Life is an adventure and there’s no better time than now to chase your dreams.
