Your First Adventure as Husband & Wife — The Honeymoon
Creating a Honeymoon You’ll Always Remember
The wedding day is something you’ll remember forever—the vows, the celebration, the people you love gathered together, and that wonderful moment when you realize:
We’re married!
And then comes another very special milestone. Your first trip together as husband and wife.
A honeymoon isn’t simply another vacation. It’s a chance to slow down after months of wedding planning, exhale, enjoy one another, and celebrate the beginning of this new chapter in your lives. And while there are plenty of lists telling you where you should honeymoon, I believe the better question is:
What kind of honeymoon feels like the two of you? That’s where thoughtful travel planning can make all the difference.
Your Honeymoon Should Tell Your Story
Some couples dream of waking up in an overwater bungalow, with turquoise waters. Others picture sipping wine at a little café in Paris, wandering through the villages of Italy, sailing through the Greek Islands, relaxing at a beautiful resort in Hawaii or Mexico, or taking a romantic cruise. There is no “perfect honeymoon destination.” There is only the honeymoon that is perfect for you.
Before We Talk About Where, Let’s Talk About You
When I work with honeymoon couples through The Walrus Travel Company, I want to learn more than your preferred destination. I want to understand how you like to travel.
Are you happiest lounging by the water with nowhere you need to be? Or are you the couple who wants to get up early and explore? Do you love intimate boutique hotels or luxurious resorts? Would you rather spend your evening at a candlelit dinner overlooking the Mediterranean—or barefoot on the beach with a tropical drink in your hand? Perhaps one of you loves adventure while the other would happily spend an entire afternoon at the spa. That’s okay, too! Part of creating a wonderful honeymoon is finding the right balance so the experience feels special to both of you.
The Details Matter
Wedding planning already comes with an enormous number of decisions. Venue. Flowers. Invitations. Seating charts. Dresses. Suits. Music. Menus. Photography. By the time couples begin seriously planning the honeymoon, making another hundred decisions may be the last thing they want to do.
That’s where working with a professional travel advisor can make the experience much easier.
At The Walrus Travel Company, I help take all those honeymoon ideas floating around in your head and turn them into a thoughtfully planned journey.
Maybe Your Dream Honeymoon Looks Like…
Italy: A few romantic days in Rome followed by Tuscany, Florence, and the Amalfi Coast.
Greece: Whitewashed villages, beautiful sunsets, Mediterranean meals, and island-hopping between places like Santorini and Mykonos.
Hawaii: Beautiful beaches combined with waterfalls, scenic drives, snorkeling, hiking, wonderful restaurants, and plenty of relaxation.
Mexico or the Caribbean: A gorgeous resort where the biggest decision of the afternoon might be beach, pool, spa—or all three.
A Mediterranean Cruise: Wake up somewhere new, explore incredible destinations during the day, and return to your ship for dinner and an evening together.
Paris and Beyond: Begin your married life with café mornings, neighborhood strolls, champagne, beautiful architecture, and perhaps continue into the French countryside.
Or maybe your dream looks completely different. Wonderful. That’s the fun part.
Give Yourselves Permission to Slow Down
Remember: You do not have to see everything. Your honeymoon isn’t a race to collect destinations.
After the excitement—and sometimes exhaustion—of a wedding, you may appreciate having mornings without an alarm clock, afternoons without reservations, and a few days when absolutely nothing is planned.
Some of the memories you cherish most may not come from a famous landmark. They may come from that little restaurant you stumbled upon, the sunset you watched together from your balcony, the morning you ordered room service and stayed in your pajamas until noon, or the unexpected adventure you’ll laugh about for years. Leave room for those moments.
A Little Advice: Start Planning Earlier Than You Think
Once you know your wedding date, it’s a good idea to start talking about the honeymoon. You don’t necessarily need to book everything immediately, but beginning the conversation early gives you more time to think about your priorities, establish a comfortable budget, research the best season for your destination, and explore the accommodations and experiences that matter most to you. And if you’re dreaming about a particularly popular destination, resort, cruise, or special room category, planning ahead can give you more choices.
Let The Walrus Help You Create Your First Great Adventure
I’ve spent more than 40 years in the travel industry, and one thing I’ve learned is that the most meaningful trips aren’t necessarily the ones with the longest itineraries or the fanciest hotel rooms. They’re the ones that feel personal. Your honeymoon deserves that kind of care.
When you work with The Walrus Travel Company, my role is to listen to your ideas, learn what matters to you, help you sort through the possibilities, and bring the pieces together into a honeymoon designed around the two of you.
You bring me the dreams. The beach you’ve been imagining. The little Italian village you saved on Instagram. The cruise you keep talking about. The resort where you picture yourselves watching the sunset. Or even the simple statement:
“Rose, we have no idea where we want to go. We just know we want it to be amazing.”
We can start there, too. Because years from now, when the wedding flowers and seating charts are long forgotten, I hope there will still be a story that begins:
“Remember our honeymoon?” And that story should be a wonderful one.
